How to knit a zip back together

You will often see me mention 'knitting' the zip back together in my tutorials. I have used this method for many years and I was quite surprised that not many people had discussed or shown how to do this method, so I thought I would show you how to do it.

I use this method because it smoothly closes the zipper teeth back together again, which not only makes inserting the zip easier but, it also gives your project a professional and secure finish.

You can use this handy trick on all sewing tutorials instead of 'tacking' the zip together with a hand sewing needle and thread. It can be a little tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it you will able to do it quickly and effortlessly, and you will never hand tack again. Here is how to do it step by step.

Step 1

Zip the zipper up to that it is roughly 1" / 2.5 cm open.

Step 2

Take a firm hold of each side of the zipper and match the zip teeth up where they would naturally sit together.

Step 3

Twist one side of the zipper upwards 90 degrees - this opens up the zip teeth wider.

Step 4

Insert the widened teeth into the opposite teeth to connect them.

Step 5

Whilst keeping the connected teeth together, twist and straighten the zipper back out until you hear a click.

Step 6

You will now have your first few teeth knitted together.

Step 7

Knit the rest of the teeth together using a back and forth twisting motion making sure the teeth click into place.
